Democratic Party (USA)

The Democratic Party is one of the two major political parties in the United States of America. The other is the Republican Party. The Democratic Party is the oldest party in the world that still exists. Its members are called Democrats, or “Dems” for short. The Democrats use a donkey as their symbol because it once appeared in a cartoon. The head of the party since 2021 has been Jaime Harrison. The Democrats’ headquarters are in Washington.

In contrast to the Republicans, the Democrats are considered progressive: in their opinion, things in the country need to change continuously in order for society to become better. They are against racism and want all people to have the same rights. This was evident, for example, in the Black Lives Matter movement.
The leader of the Democratic party since 2021 is Jaime Harrison. Previously, he wanted to become one of the two Sanotors of South Carolina. However, he lost to Republican Lindsey Graham.

Under their last president, Barack Obama, health care for poorer people was improved. Democrats also tend to back immigration of foreigners and want them to receive fair wages or schooling. They also advocate that the rich and big corporations pay enough taxes. This is to pay for just such programs for the poorer. Otherwise, however, they are rather against the state intervening in the economy. They rather don’t want everyone to be allowed to own a gun, because many accidents and crimes happen with it.

The Democratic Party was founded in 1828. At that time, it fought mainly against the fact that only the rich could vote. Thus, an actual democracy was born, which gave the party its name. Andrew Jackson, the first president of the Democrats, lived in a time when slavery still existed in the Southern states and whole Indian tribes were sent away from there. There were many Democratic voters in the South in the 19th century. Since the 20th century, however, the Democratic Party has been supported primarily in the Northeast, where there are cities with millions of residents, such as New York and Chicago, and in California.
